Jessica's Learning Log
Why we did it: Pathways Notes- It's to learn how to take notes the proper way or different ways. Apparently, we were suppose to hand it in today but most of us aren't still done.
First Night Questions: It was to learn how to take notes from a question throughout the movie. We had questions on a sheet of paper about the movie "First Night" we were watching. But througout the movie, it is going to take too long to answer the questions in a complete phrase right away so Ms.Lees said that we can take notes and write comploete sentences seperately.
Connections & Reflections: They were both basically to learn about writing notes and different types of ways to write notes.
Events: ........ HAPPY HOLIDAYS GUYS! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thrusday December 15
Block 1: Today we did a practice geography challenge. We only did three rounds, each round consisting on ten questions. The questions were based on Canadian history. Most of them asked for the names of people or places an event took place. Once we were done the rounds, we went over the answers. Afterwards we got our novels and spent the rest of the block reading.
Block 2: We had some more time to read. After ten or twenty minutes we went into the groups based on the book we read. Ms. Lees then explained that we had to make a history web based on the book we were reading. Today though we only needed do the headings. Before class was about to end we discussed the learning intention for today's activities.
Purpose
Block 1: The mock geography challenge was supposed give an idea on what the actual geography challenge is like. At the same time we are learning about the history of Canada. We were given time to read in class because in block two we needed to read the book before we can do the actual headings.
Block 2: We were given more time to read so we have enough background knowledge to make the headings for the web. The reason we were put in groups based on the book was to work on our collaborating skills with other people. This way it is easier to discuss what the headings we should have. The whole purpose of the web though was to make the history easier to process than reading a list. We discussed the learning intention for what we did today because our blogs seem to have shallow learning intentions.
Connections and Reflections
I honestly did not know anything about the people or history of Canada, so the entire thing was very confusing for me. It is good to learn about the history of the country you are living in. The geography challenge reminds me more of a Canadian history contest than a geography contest. I am glad we went over the first couple of rounds so I know where I am at, and what to brace myself for later on.
I prefer reading a book then reading a textbook even if the book is history based. Textbooks can be dreadfully dull. You don't laugh at a textbook, or cry at the end of a textbook. If you are becoming an author the setting of a place is very important. Your characters will be shaped from the setting, and your story will be shaped too. If your story takes place in a modern day, then the characters will mostly likely have never met or encountered Ancient Romans.
Making a history web is better than a report because you will have to be extremely fussy about grammar. We only did the headings because we only read so much of the book, and can't make a proper web yet. Though if we had lots of informations to process, then a web is that best way to do it since you can find the sections easily. This is true in buisness because you only have so much time to present your idea. If you use a web as a visual aid then it is easier to connect it to your other ideas for people to understand.
The learning intention, is like the reason to do something. If you are learning biology, than the purpose is for you to know biology to become a doctor.
Homework: Read your novel!

Friday December 9
What we did:
On Friday we did the verbal spelling bee. The whole class had to participate, and be the end of the third round we got our top five finalists. There was another two rounds to decide on the subsitute speller. These people will participate at the school spelling bee next Monday afterschool. After the class spelling bee, we watched the rest of the movie, First Knight. Where we left off, Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere were put on a public trail for kissing in front of King Arthur. All of the sudden Malagant's army attacks Camelot. Malagant tries to make King Arthur bow to him, but after a long suspenseful pause he yells attack and Camelot fights Malagant's army. Arthur got shoot, Lancelot and Malagant have a long swordfight, and everyone was stabbing each other. Lancelot killed Malagant on the throne, and everyone from Malagant's army retreated or got killed. Then they show a scene where Arthur is about to die, Guinevere weeps, and Arthur says his last words to Lancelot and Guinevere. Arthur dies, and then set out to sea. He is then set on fire, in the sunset.
Why we did it
We did the spelling bee because the class had to participate. We watch First knight so we can answer the questions based on the movie.
Reflections and Connections
The spelling bee is a good way to get people excited over something that many people would consider boring. That way people won't have to always use spell check. Making a competition out of spelling is very smart because now we will have more people learning the english language properly. The movie First Knight had a lot of background history to it. The movie can be used to show the kinds of religon they had a long time ago, as well as what were the living conditions, and morals at that time. The movie also made me realized how much we have advance. We have electricity, and batteries, while they only have fire.

What we did: Today, we watched a movie I think it was called " The First Night". It was a story about King Arthur but I don't know which one because there were several other King Arthurs. Anyways, it's about how somebody was jealous about King Arthur'a wiseness and richness, etc. And he wanted all that. So they start a war for it. We had to write a worksheet about it. You can write it notes first then write it in full paragraph for homework.
Learning Intentions: You can learn more about the middle Easterns and about their religion. It was also a good practice for taking notes in alot of differnt type of ways.
Connection or reflection: Middle Easterns: You might write an exam about Middle easterns so this would be a good practice study.
Notes: If you have a test coming up and your teacher`s explaining the test, you can learn to write notes about it so you can study really well.

What we did today
At the beginning of class today, we practiced our spelling by doing a mini spelling bee. We used words from all age categories. The class also worked on our note taking by watching a short clip made to give us information and a basic idea about the middle ages. As the clip was playing the class also had to take notes in a t chart form. One side had "Main Ideas" and the other had "Details". We made the notes like this because the way we usually made our notes took too much time to make while watching the clip. We also learned how to make something such as "In the mall there were 100 teenagers." into point form like, "Mall had 100 teens inside."
Connections and Reflections
The mini spelling bee was good practice and in my opinion it was really fun. In addition it really helped but was some what tricky. I also thought that the note taking was useful because I believe that every student should know how to take notes in different forms to graduate. It is because note taking is extremely useful when you are in university and when you are studying for a test. Also the main idea and detail sheet was very useful because it was a fast and efficient way to take short quick notes. It also is short enough to give you a basic understanding of the whole idea of the topic.
Learning Intention
Later on in university we will need the skill to take notes. For instance when the professor is talking you can't write down everything he says but only the parts that will give you a good understanding of the topic. The note taking also helps us study for tests and quizzes. Furthermore, the mini spelling bee will help us with our spelling and give us a slight understanding of what a real spelling bee is like.
Tip/Reminder
IT IS MANDATORY FOR EVERY STUDENT TO HAVE 50 MINUTES OF FLEX TIME PER WEEK!

Blog makeover
Today in humanities, we worked on our note taking for the pathways, and Ms Lees said that we will have time to work on it tommorow. We did outline, web and some people got to cornan note taking, And after that, we have to go to flex if we dont finish it.
WHY WE DID THIS:
WE did this because it is good to learn how to note take and will go with us all the way to grade 12 and higher. Its good because it will capture the main points when we read a story, and will help when we have a test, because it will prevent us from reading every single little detail.
CONNECTIONS:
We will use note taking all the way to grade 12 and past that. It will help us on tests.

Learning Log by Jessica Yun
We also did the package that Ms. Lees gave us. We have to finish the Questions and Answers part of it. It's where we read the story that is written in the package and there were questions for that story. With those questions, we had to find our if it was a RT question (Right There) question, and T&S question (Think and Search), etc. Than we had to answer the questions on the next page. The place where we had to put the answers is in a square divided into four parts. Those parts are divided into the "type of questions" categorie so you put the answers of the questions where you think it belongs into.
Why we did it (Learning Intentions): We did the paragraphs so that we can catch up on all our pargraphs that was suppose to be due on the day it was suppose to be due. Those paragraphs are for us to learn different types of paragraphs that we can use.
We did the Questions and Answers package because it is to help us learn what type of questions each type of questions are. It would help you know what type of question you should use when you try to ask a question.
Connection: For the paragraphs, when you have an exam to write of a particularly subject or you're doing a speech, you would know what type of paragraphs to use.
For the Answers and Questions package, It may inspire you to know what kind of question you are asking. questions are always an important part in life that is why this homeworok is good thing for your future.
Homework: You have to finish your note package.
You have to finish your Questions and Answers package. pg 191, 192, 193, 194 and 195.
Tips: Practice for Canspell and the geography test on friday.

Monday November 28 2011
At the beginning of class Ms Lees did a homework check for the explanatory paragraph outline, and for the explanatory paragraphs.
Today Ms. Lees reminded the class that everyone should be finished their portfolio now since we were given a lot of time already. It is especially important that people should be done their portfolio since Mrs. Lees is beginning to start portfolio conferences with some students. Though since the class was noisy for most of the period, only a few people got through their conferences.
Before Ms Lees began conferencing we went over the class the main points of a persuasive paragraph.
- A persuasive paragraph has to have a point
- The paragraph will always try to persuade or convince the reader to think a certain way.
- A good persuasive paragraph will always have supporting reasons to back up their point.
While Ms Lees was conferencing some of the students, we worked on highlighting the traits and words used in a persuasive paragraph in the example.
We also were supposed to do exercise one on the persuasive paragraph section. (We choose one of the following sentences, and make a persuasive paragraph out of it. If you don't like the topics choose a topic from your heart map. You do not have to do a paragraph outline for this exercise.)
We were also required to do exercise two for persuasive paragraphs as well. In this exercise you have to a paragraph outline before you start writing your paragraph. Again you can choose one of the following topics or choose a topic from you heart map.
A basic paragraph outline should look like this.
Topic sentence (Beginning, should state main point)
Point one : example one, example two
Point two: example one, example two
Concluding sentence (Ending should wrap up paragraph and state main point)
Ms. Lees also gave us a small booklet on Note making methods. There are two ways of note making methods, the first method is the outlining method. You basically write down the main idea, the important details, and maybe the conclusion. In other words it should look like your paragraph outline. The second method is mapping. It is a web where the topic is in the middle and all the points and details all connect to the main topic. Since they are notes you should really only take the important details.
If you managed to finish the persuasive paragraph exercises, you had to practice the two note making methods by reading the paragraph on the booklet and using the methods to take notes.
For the last few minutes in class Ms. Lees handed out a Can spell rule sheet, that show most of the rules in the spelling bee. Then we practiced a little bit for the spelling bee, but only one person actually stood up and spelled out the word.
Why we did it
Ms Lees came around to see if we were finished the explanatory paragraphs and outline so she can get a view over our work habits, and see if we actually did the homework.
Ms Lees reminded us about the portfolios because she expected us to have completed them already, so she can begin conferencing us. We did the conferencing so we can actually discuss why we should get this grade instead of her giving us a grade without knowing why. That way the student can get a say on what they think they deserve.
We went over persuasive paragraphs with the class so that everyone knows where the class should be at, as well as knowing the criteria for a persuasive paragraph.
We also were required to highlight parts of the example persuasive paragraph in the booklet. We were supposed to highlight the topic sentence, the concluding sentence, and what we think are types of phrases you will see in a persuasive paragraph. We did this so that in the future when we look it over we can obviously know that these are the important parts of a persuasive paragraph. We did the two exercises for the persuasive paragraph because it is good practice on writing persuasive paragraphs. The reason we had to go over methods for note making is that in the future when we are taking notes, we won't have to write every single word the teachers says. That way we would know what are the main ideas, and that way we can actually learn. We received the handout for the can spell about the rules because when we do the spelling bee, which is in two weeks, we will do it properly without breaking any rules, and not get disqualified.
Connections and Reflections
The preparation for the portfolio conferences was a lot of work, but in my opinion it is mandatory because as a student we should be able to know and have a word in what grade we deserve.
The ability to write a good persuasive paragraph, is very useful because when you want to convince someone that you are right or why you should get elected for president then you can because you are persuading them that what you think is right. A persuasive paragraph is like a debate because you always want to convince someone. In university or grades where you have to write down what the teacher is saying for like the whole class, you will have to be able to write quick and efficient notes, otherwise you will get sloppy notes, and probably fail since your notes don' t make sense. Going over the rules for the can spell spelling bee, and practicing for it is important because that way you will have some kind of experience for when the actual spelling bee happens. In a sense it is like practicing for an event like a relay race or a quiz show.

Today Ms. Lees went over the expectations for blog posting. When posting on a blog use formal and not language used for texting or facebook.
Be sure to comment other member's post, giving suggestions, and helpful reminders for the poster.
We also went over how to post, and what to do if there is technical difficulties. If you do face some technical difficulties be sure to still do the post on paper or email Ms. Lees.
After going over the blog expectations we then got into our previous blog groups and discussed the order and days for blog posting.
Ms. Lees handed out a geography landform questions sheet, for the South America Landform map (pg 70 in the geography unit).
The rest of the class time was given to work on the landform question sheet and the map.
Why we did it
The purpose of going over blogs is knowing how a blog works in general.
Writing in a blog will make you conscious about what you write, because anyone can view it.
It can also give experience in formal writing, since you will not be using texting language.
The landform map questions are instructions on what to do on the landform map. They are in the form of a question, so that you would think about the answer. That way you would put more thought into the map.
The reason for doing the landform map is to recognize types of landforms, and to learn to follow instructions.
Reflections & Connections
I found that going over how to do the blog was useful because those without a lot of experience will generally know how to work a blog. In the future knowing how to make a blog will be useful for businesses, or sharing of general news, and information. The experience from writing in formal language will also assist in in writing essays.
It is important to follow instructions because in order to do something right you have to follow instructions carefully and diligently. If you are a baker, then you have to do the steps in order, otherwise you will end up with a uneatable cake.
